Transition into 2014: Movies

In my first few posts, I will be focusing on the movies, albums and books I enjoyed the most last year, as well as the ones I plan to delve into during the next few months. For this one, its movie time…rolling and action!

Last year was a considerably good one for blockbusters and quality indie films alike. My cinematic highlight of 2013 was by far going to the Hunger Games: Catching Fire premiere, and getting to fall deeper into the fandom of such an amazing series. I can already picture myself holding a box of tissues while watching the very last scene of the second Mocking-jay feature. And here I of course have to insert an RIP salute (in Hunger Games fashion) to the unexpectedly late Philip Seymour Hoffman who was astounding as Plutarch.

For me 2013 was the year of animation, and particularly catching my eye were Wreck-It-Ralph, Despicable Me 2, Monsters University and Frozen, which has got to be one of the most beautiful Disney movies I’ve witnessed on the screen in a long time. I genuinely liked the comedies We’re The Millers and Pitch Perfect, and how could I not mention the two Hobbit movies? To be honest though most of the movies I watched last year came from years prior, where I felt the need to catch up with films I had foolishly neglected when they’d been released. One of these was The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, now being the only film along with Finding Nemo (don’t judge me) to make me cry by the end, and the story became so close to my heart that I had to purchase the book immediately after the credits were rolling.

Unfortunately, I have yet to sit down and watch all 9 flicks nominated for this year’s Best Picture Oscar, and in fact I already have Captain Phillips and 12 Years A Slave waiting in my DVD drawer. But I really need to get my oscar watch on, as I’m also eager to see Gravity, American Hustle and Her. And I am very intrigued to see Dallas Buyers Club, which I have a good feeling might become one of my favourites once I get myself to see it. I’m slightly on the fence regarding whether to give The Wolf Of Wall Street a chance. I’ve heard of so many differing views about it from extremely positive to utterly negative, that I might watch it just to be able to form my own opinion.

As for other upcoming movies for 2014, I’m definitely looking forward to Maleficent and the third Hunger Games movie, my soon to become guilty pleasures Carrie (the remake) and The Lego Movie, and The Grand Budapest Hotel which basically has the best cast in a motion picture that anyone could have ever concocted.
